Near Surface Temperature example finished graph

Stop and think

Question 1. In the fall, what area, the severe, moderate, and unburned area had the coldest near surface temperature?

Roll-over for Answer:
The severe burn had the coldest temperatures.

Question 2. Why do you think that area was coldest?

Roll-over for Answer:
The forest fire burned off the organic layer, which reduced the amount of insulation to the soil. The cold temperatures were conducted to the ground.

Question 3. In the fall, the unburned area cooled faster than the moderately burned area. Why do you think that occurred?

Roll-over for Answer:
It is difficult to tell. One possibility is that the amount of snow covering the ground in the two areas was different.
