6 Permafrost around the world

 

Step1

In Google Earth, navigate to Europe.  (Hint: from Alaska go over the pole, and hit the “R” key to right the image.)

Stop and think

Question: Where is permafrost found in Europe?

Roll-over for Answer:
In the Alps mountains, between northern Italy and Switzerland; in the Pyrenees mountains along the border between Spain and France; and in Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

Step2

In Google Earth, navigate to Mongolia and Siberia to view the location of
permafrost in Asia.

Step 3

For a different view, open the Permafrost and Circum-Arctic Permafrost folders from the sidebar by clicking the triangles. Double click on the Permafrost Map and zoom in to see Earth from above the North Pole.

Stop and think

Question: Compared to Europe is there more or less permafrost in Northeast Asia?

Roll-over for Answer:
There is much more permafrost in Northeast Asia.

Question: Both Europe and Northeast Asia are on the Eurasian continent. Why is there a difference in the amount of permafrost between the two areas?

Roll-over for Answer:
The climate and temperatures of each area are different. Europe has warmer temperatures due to the influence of predominate weather patterns from the Atlantic.

Step 4

Navigate to Tibet by typing Tibet in the Search box to have Google Earth fly you to that location.
