3 Open Arctic Permafrost file in Google Earth

 

Step 1

Launch Google Earth. Under the layers side panel click off everything except “Borders and Labels” and “Terrain.” Leaving everything else off will help reduce the clutter on the screen and will help Google Earth run faster.

Step 2

From the Google Earth menu change the elevation units to kilometers by clicking on Preferences (On a PC, choose Tools --> Options). Under the 3D View tab click the radio button for “Meters, Kilometers.”

Step 3

From the Google Earth menu File --> Open the file NSIDC_cryosphere.kml.

By default, the file will zoom to Greenland. At the bottom of the Places sidebar (to the left of the map), under Temporary Places, click the triangle next to NSIDC. At the bottom of the list, select the Permafrost button.
